As it happens, I am not too old for acid jazz, ambient, or garage.
The book “High Fidelity” and its subsequent film remain two of my all-time favorite media. Nick Hornby is also one of my favorite authors.
In my youth, I was caught between two musical worlds: my identity as a Goth and Industrial kid and my interest in the growing Rave and Electronica scene. In addition, I also had a past thoroughly grounded in the ’70s and ’80s and enjoyed club nostalgia nights of new wave and disco.
The title struck a nerve when Laura, the girlfriend of protagonist Rob Gordon, approached him with an idea she had to solve his midlife crisis. Dance Music for Old People! It’s a way of saying you like new and old stuff, too.
Dance Music for Old People incorporates several discarded projects. “Retroactive” was, at its core, meant to highlight remixes and cover versions of “classic” songs. “What’s that Sound?” was meant to identify samples of classic songs used in modern pop. It took (checks calendar) fourteen years to marry them together, and DM4OP is the result. Enjoy!
